Slow entry also damages the programme itself when people miss openings and spend the morning catching up.
What good check-in looks like in practice
Strong check-in starts long before the door. Attendee records must stay connected to registration, including late changes, so staff are not working from a fragile overnight export. Design for exceptions explicitly: name mismatches, plus-ones, and lost confirmations are normal. Train volunteers on the override path before peak hour, and document who can approve special cases. Rehearse with the real scanners, printers, and networks you will use, including an offline backup plan. Technology should shorten queues; hospitality should still make people feel expected. Clear signage, calm lane management, and a pre-arrival message about what to bring shrink lobby confusion more than adding another scanner alone.
